Purpose-driven firms will thrive in new economy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NAPERVILLE, Ill. March 16, 2011 – The most successful companies to emerge in an improving economy will be those that focus on the simple and essential purpose of their business while putting employees at the top of their priority list, according to the article, What’s your Purpose? from the latest issue of Return on Performance, the official magazine of the Incentive Marketing Association (IMA).
The article describes how companies, by succinctly defining and clearly communicating the purpose of their business, can create shared enthusiasm among leaders and employees, which can lead to outperforming the rest of the marketplace. “Studies prove that purpose is pivotal to organizational success,” the article states. “Organizations driven by purpose and values tend to outperform the general market by 15 to one, and comparison companies six to one.”
According to IMA Executive Director Karen Renk, having a clear sense of purpose, apart from a traditional mission or vision statement, fosters a collective culture of employee involvement. “Purpose is the ultimate incentive because it gives people shared goals and ideals,” she said. “It taps into the passion behind production and uncovers the reason organizations do what they do, and causes employees to become emotionally invested in their jobs.”
The article points to a variety of real-life examples from leading companies, consultants, and academic experts who make the link between purpose, and its impact on people performance, engagement and enrichment.
